What is a computer
A computer is an electronic device that manipulates information or "data." It has the ability to store, retrieve, and process data. You can use a computer to type documents, send email, and surf the Internet. You can also use it to handle spread sheets, accounting, database management, presentations, games, and more.
Whether you realize it or not, computers play an important role in our lives. When you withdraw cash from an ATM, scan groceries at the store, or use a calculator, you're using a type of computer.

The most important software, on a computer is the operating system.
The operating system (sometimes referred to by its abbreviation OS), is responsible for creating the link between the material resources, the user and the applications. When a programme wants to access a material resource, it does not need to send specific information to the peripheral device but it simply sends the information to the operating system, which conveys it to the relevant peripheral via its driver. If there are no drivers, each programme has to recognise and take into account the communication with each type of peripheral!
So the operating system mainly simplifies resource management, and offers the user a simpler interface to overcome the complexity of the actual machine.
